Overcoming Unique Challenges

Lighting for Harsh EnvironmentsLED lighting for harsh environments introduces some unique challenges – robust components, optimized thermals, and a lot of experience are required. In the case of food processing plants, this is almost certainly the case. In 2015, with the relationship continuing today, Opulent Americas was hired by a lighting manufacturer that specializes in extreme environments to design and engineer components to stand up to high ambient temperatures, moisture and potentially chemicals.

The Opulent team began working with this manufacturer after their product team had been researching L2 boards and heat sinks to work within the final fixture. Finding the right fit proved to be difficult. An off-the-shelf solution was not compatible with what was necessary to get the job done and requests for custom solutions were not met with enthusiasm. According to the Product Manager, “most companies were fairly slow to respond to our custom requests and sometimes their engineering/math just didn’t add up. The Opulent team took the time to really listen and understand our needs. They provided personal service, the customization we needed, and with a speed of delivery and responsiveness normally not found in our industry.”

For this particular project, the Opulent team quickly redesigned an off-the-shelf board, recommended a new LED and optimized the thermal solution. Prototypes using Cree LEDs with Opulent heat sinks and boards were built in their North Carolina based lab. The engineering team was able to seamlessly create a product to support the harsh environment high bay project.

The Opulent Americas team works to turn the complex into a real solution. In this case, it took listening to the customer, working through temperature requirements, and minimizing cost to create the optimal fixture.

Opulent North America’s Custom Lighting Solutions Now Available at Digi-Key

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn., Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — A variety of Opulent North America’s LED modules, heatsinks and starboards are now available through Digi-Key Electronics, a global electronic components distributor, as a result of a global distribution agreement between the two companies.

Opulent North America enables engineers to accelerate their designs by providing a variety of starboards and LED modules in multiple color temperatures and configurations. They also differentiate themselves with their capability to provide custom solutions upon request.

The Changing Landscape that is LED Lighting

In the ever changing landscape that is LED lighting, it can be rather difficult for a company to keep up with all the technological and regulatory changes. Everyone likes an easy solution to a problem and when you look at all the options that are available, it does not appear easy by any stretch of the imagination.

The higher efficiency LEDs in the mid-power segment can show great potential for all types of fixtures; and the high power devices can show lower system cost with a smaller footprint. As with any choice there are a number of tradeoffs to these two types of SMD (surface mount device) solutions.

So how can it be easy with all these options, when you just need a simple, elegant solution? This is when higher density devices like COBs start getting discussed. It is very tempting to consider this type of device for all of your manufacturing and production needs. So why not? They are “easy” to handle, they are “easy” for manufacturing, and they are “easy” to meet regulatory certifications. They just make life “easy”.

You might have someone selling you on this ease of process or how easy LED design can be. The reality is that these components are not “easy”, and there are a number of concerns that should be considered.

If you do choose to look at a COB, you may want to start by looking at thermal performance. Most derating curves for this product show a significant decline in performance once temperatures exceed 85c at 25c ambient. The catch is always the ambient… even in the driver world the ambient rise will cause your Tc to rise thus exceeding your initial calculations for lifetime and performance.
